Writtle Singers is a chamber choir based in
Writtle, near Chelmsford, Essex.
"A choir of excellent discipline, diction and phraseology with a well-balanced harmony"
"Interesting music, intelligently programmed, enthusiastically sung."
The choir performs a varied repertoire
from plainchant, motets and madrigals to many styles of contemporary
music. As well as smaller, unaccompanied pieces the Singers’
recent performances include J S Bach St John
Passion, Magnificat and the Mass in B minor, Haydn Nelson Mass and Purcell Dido and Aeneas,
all with orchestra. Themed concerts are also a feature of the
choir’s
programme, with Venice, London, ‘the countryside’
and Paris all coming
under the spotlight. In 2004 the choir took part in a
collaborative performance of the Brahms
Requiem with the Valentine Singers and undertook its first
continental tour
to Belgium. In 2005 Writtle Singers took on a second continental tour this time to Prague.
2008 brought us concerts, I was glad a collection of music based on words from the Psalms, and The Wind in the Willows a concert centred around the John Rutter's musical adaptation of Kenneth Grahame’s enchanting book, and an adventure in Transformations showing that the performers must do more than just reproduce the notes that are on the page!
Writtle Singers meet on
